In Panofsky's interpretation D�rer brings together different traditions and combines them with his 'spiritual self-portrait: "Thus D�rer's most perplexing engraving is, at the same time, the objective statement of a general philosophy and the subjective confession of an individual man.
But in doing all this it is in a sense a spiritual self-portrait of Albrecht D�rer."
Perhaps the most prevalent analysis suggests the engraving represents the melancholy of the creative artist, and that it is a spiritual self-portrait of Dürer himself.
